Paul Stolper is pleased to announce the forthcoming exhibition ‘New Song’, woodcuts by Magne Furuholmen. The exhibition will include the portfolio ‘Esper Lucat’ as well as a set of 12 new individual prints. “I wake up in the morning to try and make something worthwhile that wasn’t there the day before, and to learn something from the materials I choose to work with.” Magne Furuholmen
The portfolio ‘Esper Lucat’, translated from the old Provençal vernacular to ‘See the Light’ or ‘Let Hope Shine’, consists of 7 woodcuts and are an homage to French modernist Henri Matisse. They are inspired by the ceremonial robes (chasubles) which Matisse created as part of his extensive commission for La Chapelle de Rosaire in Vence, France, a place revered by Magne Furuholmen.
Furuholmen’s parallel practice as a visual artist and musician increasingly allows individual works to inform each other, where words and statements are subjected to different use and scrutiny between the different mediums of poems, song lyrics, text, prints and sculpture.
