Art in Motion

Shapero Modern presents Art in Motion, an exhibition of work by Alexander Calder (1898–1976), a central figure in twentieth-century modernism.

Comprising original gouaches, drawings, a substantial body of lithographs, and tapestry work, the exhibition considers Calder’s sustained preoccupation with balance, colour, and line across four decades and multiple media. Seahorse, for instance, draws on a motif with particular resonance for Calder, situating the sea creature within the artist’s broader interest in biomorphic form; ‘L’Etoile Rouge’ similarly demonstrates his recurring vocabulary of stars, spirals, and organic shapes, rendered here in lithographic form.

Considered together, these works reveal an artist working through the same formal concerns — equilibrium, movement, and the relationship between form and space — across paper and textile. ‘Art in Motion’ offers a focused study of Calder’s graphic and textile production, and of the visual language that runs through it.
