Now in its third generation and a family business since 1946, Galerie Henze & Ketterer specializes in Modern art and contemporary art with a focus on German Expressionism. Since the mid-1950s, the gallery has managed the estate of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, one of the most important artists of this movement and co-founder of the artists' association "Brücke". In this way, Galerie Henze & Ketterer contributes to showing the works of "Brücke", Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Expressionism in one form or another in international museums. Classical Modern art, Informal Art (L'Art Informel) and Abstraction after 1945, New Figuration and contemporary art with painters and sculptors from Italy, Spain and Germany form the gallery's other focal points. In addition to Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the gallery also manages the archives and estates of Berthold Müller-Oerlinghausen, Theo Eble and Fritz Winter. With the information from the"Archiv Stuttgarter Kunstkabinett Roman Norbert Ketterer", Galerie Henze & Ketterer makes an important contribution to international provenance research on the art of Modern art. ‍ Since the early 1970s, the gallery has participated in international art fairs, including Art Basel, FIAC Paris, Masterpiece London and, to this day, TEFAF Maastricht, Art Cologne and Art Karlsruhe. The gallery is represented online via various Online Viewing Rooms (OVR) as well as with profiles at artsy.net, artnet.com, ifpda.org, printed-editions.com, ocula.com, Instagram, Youtube and LinkedIn.
Modern (1900-1950)
Human Being & Nature – German Woodcuts 1906-2002
Viewing Room Image 1
Depictions of human beings and nature in woodcuts by artists of the Expressionisms such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner to contemporary artists such as Georg Baselitz.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner - Early Woodcuts
Viewing Room Image 2
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner used the woodcut technique to duplicate his work, as was the case in previous centuries, but with the aim of exploring the individual possibilities of expression.
Georg Baselitz: Woodcuts 1981-2008
Viewing Room Image 3
Since 1964, prints have accompanied Baselitz's work as a painter and draftsman. Woodcuts were a main technique in his oeuvre.
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff - Woodcuts 1913-1922
Viewing Room Image 4
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, like numerous Expressionists, was critical of the war from the start and he also worked for Franz Pfemferts revolutionary magazine "Die Aktion", which was opposed to the war.
Emil Nolde: Etchings 1906-1922
Viewing Room Image 5
Fantastic scenes, which, however, again and again remind of such from myth, fairy tale, Bible or history, but probably not clearly determinable, increase in these years in the work of Emil Nolde.
Erich Heckel and his Muses
Viewing Room Image 6
From girlfriends, companions, dancers, actresses to casual acquaintances: In the graphic work of Erich Heckel, a woman is often at the centre. The female body inspired Heckel to create woodcuts, lithographs and etchings, in which he found inspiration for motif and style.
Kirchner and Baselitz. Remix: Repetition in the Woodcut
Viewing Room Image 7
Using different artistic techniques and without hierarchical weighting, Baselitz and Kirchner utilised repetition as a method to create works with a high degree of independence and distinctiveness.
