Galerie Henze & Ketterer

Founded in 1946, Galerie Henze & Ketterer celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2026. Now in its third generation of family ownership, the gallery specialises in Modern and Contemporary Art, with a particular focus on German Expressionism.
Since the mid-1950s, the gallery has administered the estate of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, one of the most important representatives of German Expressionism and a co-founder of the artist group Brücke. The scholarly study of his oeuvre, the administration of his estate and collaboration with international museums and institutions form an integral part of the gallery’s work. Further areas of focus include Modern Art, Informel and abstraction after 1945, New Figuration, and Contemporary Art, with artists from Italy, Spain and Germany. Across three floors, the gallery presents exhibitions devoted to German Expressionism, particularly Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, as well as to Modern Art and abstraction after 1945. The KUNST-DEPOT, designed by the architects Gigon/Guyer, provides additional exhibition space for Contemporary Art and large-scale works.
Since the early 1970s, Galerie Henze & Ketterer has participated in international art fairs, including Art Basel, FIAC Paris, Masterpiece London, Art Cologne, Art Karlsruhe and, to this day, TEFAF Maastricht.
The gallery has been based in Wichtrach near Bern since 1993. Previously, it was located in Stuttgart from 1946, and in Campione d’Italia on Lake Lugano in 1962 and 1970. From 2001 to 2024, the gallery also maintained a branch in Riehen near Basel. In addition to Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the gallery administers the archives and estates of Berthold Müller-Oerlinghausen, Theo Eble and Fritz Winter. The Archive Stuttgarter Kunstkabinett Roman Norbert Ketterer provides an important foundation for international provenance research into Modern Art.
The gallery’s activities also encompass the art trade, commissions, art books and publications, as well as advisory services relating to documentation, authenticity, conservation, insurance and transport. The gallery has long maintained close working relationships with artists, collectors, colleagues and curators.
In addition to its exhibitions and publications, the gallery maintains a digital presence through various Online Viewing Rooms and profiles on Artsy, Artnet, IFPDA, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn.
