Portraits of women are inextricably linked to the visual arts. They can be seen on pre-Christian Egyptian vases as well as on the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry. Depictions of female saints or of Mary and her mother Anne are ubiquitous in medieval painting as well as in later centuries. From the early modern period onwards, portraits of secular women, mostly from wealthy families, began to emerge.
