Our exhibition of prints, Emil Nolde Works 1906-1922, is dedicated to the particularly intensive creative phase of this important expressionist. The majority of Nolde’s printmaking oeuvre was created during this period.
Equally skilled in woodcut, lithography and etching, and willing to experiment like no other artist of his time, Nolde delivers a graphic work on par with his paintings, watercolors and drawings.
Nolde explores all the technical possibilities of etching in order to achieve painterly and nuanced effects; he creates masterpieces in woodcut and uses various exotic and sometimes colored papers to perfect them; he varies the color combinations of his lithographs so thoroughly that in the entire edition of a sheet hardly any print is like the other. The individuality of each print determines his work, not the reproduction of the prints. This individual approach to printmaking makes Nolde an outstanding artist in this medium.
