Shapero Modern brings together striking works of art from one of the 20th Century’s defining movements: Abstract Expressionism. Come and explore the exhibition at their Maddox Street Gallery, where the focus of the exhibition will be on the maverick of modern printmaking and second-generation Abstract Expressionist, Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011).

Alongside Frankenthaler’s work hang those of artists that inspired and worked with her, including Willem de Kooning.

Although influenced by first-generation artists like Willem de Kooning and most significantly, Jackson Pollock, Frankenthaler’s own painterly style was ultimately a departure from theirs, expanding the possibilities of abstraction and eventually transitioning into Colour Field painting.

This exhibition explores Frankenthaler’s differences as well as similarities with works on paper from some of the most significant first and second-generation Abstract Expressionists, including Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell and Richard Diebenkorn, among others.
