Céline Huyghebaert presents the first explorations of a visual and textual project around the word “nothing/rien.” In English. Because the indefinite pronoun nothing is unaccompanied by a negating adverb, we can amuse ourselves indefinitely constructing ambivalent sentences like these: Nothing is manifest. Nothing exists. Nothing can disappear. The word conjures up something more tangible than evanescent. Is nothing a present or an absence? And if it is an absence, can we miss it? What is its nature? Its shape? That of an empty impression, of a crack, of a hole? Is there really nothing in the hole? To explore these questions, the artist collaborated with the A. Piroir Studio-Gallery for a creative residency. The works created use text and photographic images, engraving and embossing to try to give a shape to nothing.
