To celebrate new beginnings at London’s inaugural Treasure House Fair, Long-Sharp Gallery presents Andy’s Secret Garden, an exhibition containing over a dozen fresh-to-the-market drawings and unique prints by Andy Warhol from his first (1950s) and last (1980s) decade in New York.
Warhol’s paintings of flowers from his 1964 exhibit at Leo Castelli’s gallery are some of his most widely recognized works — but they represent neither the beginning nor the end for this iconic subject matter. Warhol’s affinity for flowers can be traced back to childhood; his mother went door-to-door selling self-made metal flowers (from Campbell’s soup cans, no less), while Andy and his brothers watched from the bushes. According to his brother, John, Andy planted a little flower bed outside the family home and sketched flowers and butterflies while his brothers played baseball.
Andy’s Secret Garden will focus on flower- and garden-inspired drawings in Warhol’s pre-pop oeuvre. The presentation will be accompanied by a discussion of Warhol’s life and work during his first decade in New York. Polaroid and gelatin silver photography and rare prints from the 1980s will explore Warhol’s continued focus on this subject matter.
