Jean Paul Riopelle was born in Montreal in 1923. Following studies at the Polytechnic School and the Montreal Furniture School, he joined the Automatistes group alongside Paul-Émile Borduas and was a co-signer of Refus Global in 1948 That same year, he moved to Paris where he lived for many years.


In the early 1950s his large mosaic paintings painted with a spatula earned him resounding success. From then on, the artist never ceased to accumulate tokens of recognition: in addition to several prestigious prizes, several museums devoted major retrospective exhibitions to him from 1967. Jean-Paul Riopelle’s considerable body of work includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and engravings. Jean-Paul Riopelle died in Isle-aux-Grues, Quebec in 2002.
