Marlborough London is pleased to present two upcoming exhibitions celebrating the work of Joe Tilson (b. 1928).
Modest Materials is an overview of Joe Tilson’s career, spanning over seven decades. Ranging from experimental abstractions of the 1950’s to bold Pop Art, elaborate wooden reliefs, to his most recent body of work honouring his love for Venice and Tuscany, the exhibition will showcase some of his most iconic works throughout the decades.
A-Z Box of Friends and Family is an exhibition on the first-floor gallery. Inspired by Tilson’s 1963 work of the same title, this exhibition will include original artworks by friends including Frank Auerbach, David Hockney, Eduardo Paolozzi and Richard Hamilton, and some of his talented family members. The exhibition celebrates Joe Tilson’s extraordinary work and life, highlighting the ways he has impacted many artist’s lives.
The exhibitions coincide with the publication of a major monograph published by Lund Humphries. Written by Marco Livingston and designed by Joe’s son Jake Tilson, the book will provide a definitive account of the artist’s oeuvre and will be available for purchase at the opening.
