EXPRESSIVE! Music & Dance in Modern Art
Galerie Henze & Ketterer
Opening Reception: March 30th from 6 pm until 9 pm.
Over and over again, artists have tried and still try to capture rhythm, music and movement in works of art, to represent them symbolically, through abstractly designed lines and shapes, or through objects related to them.
Thus, dancers were preferably depicted by the artists of Expressionism, how they dressed or exposed themselves, how they moved, how they let themselves be inspired by music, how they danced to the music, how they let themselves be carried away by it into ecstasy.
The works in the exhibition show how different modern artists have dealt with the subjects of “dance” and “music”, whether in the form of people making music or the abstract creation of “rhythms”.
In the exhibition, we invite you to take a journey through representations of music and dance in paintings, works on paper and sculptures by:
Ernst Barlach – Philipp Bauknecht – Erich Heckel – Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Berthold Müller-Oerlinghausen – Emil Nolde – Max Pechstein – Karl Schmidt-Rottluff – Bernard Schultze – Georg Tappert – Fritz Winter
You can reach us from the SBB railway station by tram 2 (direction “Eglisee”), which takes you to “Badischer Bahnhof”, where you change to tram 6 (direction “Riehen, Grenze”) to the “Riehen-Dorf” stop. Or take the regional train S6 (direction “Zell”) to the stop “Riehen”.
