ALEX KATZ
“With the artist’s eyes”
– selected prints, works on paper, and cutouts

Following an initial exhibition in 2020, Galerie Boisserée will once again showcase works by Alex Katz starting from March 22, 2023. Carefully selected exhibits come together to form a major exhibition focusing on female portraits, stylized flower and landscape images. The works from nearly thirty years depict the thematic diversity and the artist’s joy in exploring various printmaking techniques.

For over seventy years, Alex Katz has presented us with his snapshots and minimalist representations of the observed world. Katz has profoundly influenced American art since World War II with his images, like few others. Drawing inspiration from Pop Art, his works still bear the important characteristics of this style: bold representation, proximity to graphic design, and the aesthetics of journals and fashion magazines. Through his body of work developed over many decades, he provides a stylistic testament to the 20th and early 21st centuries, expanding American art history with his “Cool Painting” as the abstract expressionism and Pop Art did. The continuity with which Katz pursues his artistic practice, both formally and thematically, is unparalleled.

It is from this continuity that the incomparable freshness of his works arises, making them appear so modern, whether they are early paintings or recent graphics. The exhibition invites visitors to wander through motifs from nearly thirty years of his creative journey, akin to flipping through the pages of a magazine, and to enjoy the unique perspectives and recurring encounters with the depicted subjects. The bold cuts, repetitions, and Katz’s play with formats and focus provide insight into the artist’s compositional methods.

The exhibition visitor quickly realizes that, in addition to the aesthetics of fashion magazines and large-scale billboard advertisements, film also exerts a significant influence on Alex Katz. These influences, accessible to us all, lead viewers to immediately feel at ease with these works and engage in a direct dialogue with them. Katz is not interested in creating an elevated portrayal of people or landscapes but rather captures moments and instants familiar to us all. This cultural permeation, his idea of reaching everyone, may be the key to the sustained and positive reception he has received over such a long period.

The exhibition will be on view from March 22 to May 20, 2023, at Galerie Boisserée. A companion catalog featuring a text by Prof. Dr. Beate Reifenscheid, Director of the Ludwig Museum Koblenz, will be published. The catalog will be available at the gallery and online, priced at Euro 10 including domestic shipping.
