Johnny Friedlaender (German / French, 1912-1992) was born in 1912 in Pless (Pszczyna), Germany (now Poland). He graduated from the Academy of Arts (Akademie der Bildenden Kunste) in Breslau in 1928. He was imprisoned in 1933 as an opponent to the regime, fleed to Czechoslovakia, then Prague, and eventually received asylum in France. In the late 1930s, Friedlaender began showing work in Parisian galleries and publications. He also worked as an illustrator for art magazines and books. In 1940, Friedlaender was sent to an internment camp as a German national in France. After several releases and re-arrests, Friedlaender returned to France in 1945 and slowly settled into life as an artist. He was featured in many Parisian exhibitions in the 1950s, began producing portfolios with several publishers, exhibited internationally, and founded his own school, l’Ermitage. He continued to teach, including at the Academy of Salzburg, and produce work late into life. He passed away in Paris in 1992.
