Glen E. Alps (American, 1914-1996) was born in Loveland, Colorado in 1914. He received a BA from Colorado State College of Education and an MFA from the University of Washington. He was the creator and professor of the Printmaking Department at the University of Washington where he taught for 37 years. Alps is best known for developing a printing technique that he coined the ‘collagraph’ involving printing from variously assembled surfaces. Alps’s collagraphs formed the intersection of printmaking and collage, building a printing plate with objects like fabric and sand that produced unique textural effects. He also experimented with pyrography and burnt lacquer plates. Among Alps’s students were Joe Feddersen and James W. Washington Jr. His work is held in the collections of institutions internationally. He passed away in Seattle in 1996.
