gallery neptune & brown is pleased to introduce New England artist Paul Inglis to Washington D.C. in the exhibition Rise & Shine opening on April 30th. Concurrently on view will be editions by New York artist Joel Shapiro. Both Inglis and Shapiro emphasize a spatial relationship with the figure. Modernist lines and folk-art sensibilities can be seen in each artist’s geometric forms. The small scale of Inglis’s work invites the viewer to have an intimate conversation with the objects. For Inglis, his work reflects observations of his surroundings. In abstracting from these memories, Inglis makes connections to emotions associated with the built environment. His painted wood sculptures playfully represent his systems of construction and are enhanced with vibrant colors.

Inglis’s sculptures, which he calls critters, are not only influenced by his experience of urban spaces but also by the objects in his studio. Antique toys and collectibles inform the scale and nostalgic color palette. Through the manipulation of his woodblocks and the use of chine collé, Inglis creates monoprints with interlocking patterns and depths of color. Inglis permits the viewer into his world, allowing opportunities for varied interpretation. The work balances the personal without being overly sentimental.

Joel Shapiro has exhibited widely and his large-scale sculptures can be found in DC and Maryland at the Kennedy Center, The Holocaust Museum, The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, and The Baltimore Museum of Art.

Paul Inglis: Rise & Shine will be on view at the gallery April 30th through June 4th, 2022. For further information please contact Robert Brown at [email protected] or call 202.986.1200. There will be a Meet & Greet with Paul Inglis on April 30th, 2022 from 4 – 6 pm.
