Hauser & Wirth New York will explore Philip Guston’s (1913 – 1980) significant, yet often-overlooked, printmaking practice, filling a longstanding void in discussions of the artist’s oeuvre. Organized around three titular themes, ‘Room, Sea & Sky’ investigates the metamorphic qualities of Guston’s practice through his printmaking, particularly towards the end of his life when a heart attack limited his ability to execute large-scale paintings. It was then that he began his collaboration with the famed printshop Gemini GEL and its director Sidney Felsen (1924 – 2024), creating a series of major prints that evolved his practice to its most mature form.
