Per Kirkeby b. 1938 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Lives and works in Copenhagen. Per Kirkeby is considered to be the major expressionist Danish painter of his generation, but his prints make it clear that he is equally influential as a Danish graphic artist of the same period. The explosive surfaces and textures that meet like tectonic plates on Kirkeby’s canvas are formulated in acid, copper sparks and deep scratches in print. The monumentality of Kirkeby’s paintings lightens and quickens on the copper plate, and the sculptural forms familiar from his stone works assume a natural place in his prints.
