Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe
Painter, printmaker, writer and book illustrator, Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe was born in Langley near Macclesfield in 1901. He is noted for his depictions of birds, animals and the countryside.
He attended the Macclesfield School of Art on a scholarship. Between 1915 and 1921 he attended the Manchester School of Art, gaining his diploma in painting in 1923.
In 1975, Tunnicliffe was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Society For the Protection of Birds. A prolific illustrator, he contributed to a number of books.
