Engraver, draughtsman and mapmaker, Jan Saenredam was born in Zaandam in 1565. He was orphaned as a child and raised by an uncle, Pieter de Jongh, a bailiff in Assendelft. Initially, Saenredam was brought up for a life of farm labor and handiwork, but he pursued drawing and in time, he attained success as a mapmaker. In 1589, he entered the circle of Hendrick Goltzius and worked, briefly, with Goltzius and Jacques de Gheyn II. In 1595 Saenredam returned to Assendelft, married and had a son, Pieter.
